Summer session chamber orchestra
Week 2, July 17-21 12:30-2:00PM – Classical favorites!
Come join us for a brief overview of classical orchestral favorites. We will introduce four well loved classical pieces for chamber orchestra, focusing on the basic skills of playing in a chamber orchestra, orchestra etiquette, how to follow a conductor, and tips on how to get more out of rehearsals in a short period of time. The last day will have a final rehearsal which will be open to any parents or friends who are interested in watching a live dress rehearsal.
Week 3 July 24-28th 12:30-2:00PM
Rock, Pop and Broadway! This week we will be learning four arrangements of rock, pop and broadway show tunes. This music will feature alternative string techniques not normally found in classical. We will cover different modern styles, skills and rhythms found in pop and rock music for strings as well as a brief summary of electric instruments, pickups and amplifiers. Our final class will be open to anyone who would like to listen. It is recommended that students wanting to sign up for this class have a decent understanding of counting and rhythm as well as can read sheet music and have some orchestral experience.
Requirements for both classes: Students must be able to read sheet music, play at least two 1 octave scales, be familiar with basic counting and rhythm, be able to play in key signatures with 0-2 sharps or 1 flat. Previous experience is not required, but will help.
STUDENTS MUST HAVE TIME TO PRACTICE EVERYDAY AT HOME!
These will both be fun, exciting and slightly intense weeks and the more at home practice that is done, the more enjoyable rehearsals will be.
HAND DRUM CLASS ADDED TO SUMMER SCHEDULE!!!
Percussionist: Alex Jenkins will teach a hand drum class during the 3rd week of SPMA Summer 17′ This One Week Class will meet Monday through Friday: July 24th through July 28th at 10:30am, for 90 minutes each day. The Class will conclude with a short performance at Clara, in the Courtyard on Friday at the end of the week between 12 and 12:30pm

Jenkin’s in-depth study of world music culture gives Alex a sound that transcends musical traditions and boundaries. The Grand Opening on Second Second Saturday at Clara was great for Sac Prep Music Academy. We had many people cruise through the studios to check out our scene, see what we offer and what we’re all about. We handed out a bunch of brochures and met a lot of new faces & we’re always happy to add people to Ukulele Project & our Guitar Project.
Yesterday, Sac Prep Music Academy had the pleasure of performing at Diversity Awareness Day at The Federal Building on Cottage way. Big thanks to Nicole Ward for setting the Academy up with this opportunity. Two of our students performed a selection of red hot fiddle tunes, and Alex Bonilla performed two classical guitar pieces between our set and the next performers. Always a great thing to have students performing out in public, as it fulfills our mission as a 501c3 public benefit organization.
Please come support Sac Prep Music at Curtis Fest on August 28th.
Our Students will take the stage at 11:30am (hopefully before it’s too hot), and we will run a booth for the duration of the event.
